Medicare
Getting support for your mental health doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.
With a valid card, Medicare can help cover part of the cost of accessing psychological treatment, making treatment more affordable and accessible.
Accessing psychology sessions through Medicare
Step 1: Make an appointment with your GP
-
Book an appointment with your GP.
-
If appropriate, they’ll prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
-
This plan outlines your needs and connects you with a psychologist.
Step 2: Obtain a referral (Mental Health Care Plan)
-
Your GP will refer you for up to 6 sessions first.
-
After these, you’ll return to your GP for a review.
-
If more support is needed, you can access up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year (plus up to 10 group sessions).
Costs and rebates
-
Medicare provides a rebate for each session. You will receive $98.95 processed on the day.
Your privacy
-
Your treatment plan and sessions are confidential.
